ITTF. The women’s team event of the World Team Championships came to its final round between China and Japan. After a series of victories, China successfully defends the title.
The first match for this round was between Liu Shiwen and Ai Fukuhara. The Chinese player was quick to establish her control over the match and sealed a 2-0 lead. Ai Fukuhara tried to stop a sweep victory from her opponent but it was just too difficult.
Liu Shiwen sealed 11-5, 11-6, 11-8, giving a powerful head start for the Chinese Team.
The Grand Slam champion Li Xiaoxia was next into the arena and faced Kasumi Ishikawa. It is noted that the Chinese player is still adjusting on her condition in the competition after a series of injuries that plagued her since last year.
Today, she struggled again. The Grand Slam champion found herself in a 0-2 deficit. In the third set, Kasumi Ishikawa still had the momentum but lost her opportunities. Li Xiaoxia seized her chances well and gained two straight sets.
As the decider progressed, pressure shifted to the Japanese camp as Li Xiaoxia was gaining control. In the end, Li Xiaoxia scored 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-5. In her interview after, Li Xiaoxia said that the reason for her victory was that she had a strong team and supporters.
The last match was between Ding Ning and the young player Mima Ito. Using the timeout, the Japanese player convincingly got the first advantage. Ding Ning gladly returned the favour and levelled herself in 1-1.
At this point, Mima Ito wasn't able to get back her control into the table once again as Ding Ning dominated almost every rally. The world champion even posted a 7-0 lead in the fourth set. Ding Ning concluded the battle with 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-1.
China is once again the world women's team champion.
